Comprehensive Eye Exams at AZ Family EyeDocs

A comprehensive eye exam is more than a glasses prescription — it is a complete checkup for your visual system and a window into your overall health. Our optometrists evaluate how well you see, how your eyes work together and whether there are early signs of disease such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes or high blood pressure.

What’s included

Every adult exam includes a review of your health history and medications, visual acuity and refraction (your prescription), binocular vision and eye-movement testing, eye-pressure measurement for glaucoma, and an evaluation of the front and back of the eye. We use Optomap® ultra-widefield retinal imaging so most patients can skip dilation and get back to their day.

How often should adults have an eye exam?

We recommend an exam every year. Many eye diseases have no symptoms in their early stages — by the time you notice a change, damage may already be permanent. An annual visit is also the best way to keep contact lens and glasses prescriptions current and your vision benefits used.

Convenient North Valley locations

Choose our Desert Ridge office at Tatum Blvd. & Loop 101 or our Summit office at Scottsdale Rd. & Ashler Hills Both are open Saturdays and accept most vision plans.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be dilated?

Most patients don’t. Optomap retinal imaging captures more than 80% of the retina in a single, undilated image. Your doctor may still recommend dilation for certain conditions.

How long does an exam take?

Plan on 30–45 minutes for a new patient exam, including check-in, and a little longer if you also need a contact lens fitting or frame selection.

Is an eye exam covered by insurance?

Routine exams are typically covered by vision plans such as VSP or EyeMed — see our insurance page or call and we will check your benefits.

This page provides general eye-health information and is not a substitute for an exam with your doctor.
